Obituary

Mary Carswell Crandall, 89 of North Main Street passed away on Wednesday January 5, 2022. She was born October 14, 1932 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Harry and Anne Donovan Carswell. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Charles E. Crandall, Jr. in February 2001. A lifelong Herkimer resident, Mary was a graduate of Herkimer High School class of 1949 and a proud graduate of St. Mary's School of nursing in Amsterdam, NY. Mary worked as a surgical nurse for several years, including working while her husband Charles attended Albany Law School from 1959-1962. She also worked in the Crandall Law Office for many years. Mary is survived by her four children, Charles E. III (Isabella), John H. (Debra), Susan A. Crandall and Catherine B. Crandall (George Melita); seven grandchildren, Charles E. Crandall IV (Natalie), Nicole Crandall, Shane Crandall, Ashley Crandall, Kyle Crandall (Jenna), John H. Crandall, Jr. and Sean Crandall, as well as two step grandchildren Jordan and Jenna Melita. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren Charles Henry and Lucy Crandall, Charleigh Crandall Casamento, Hunter and Cash Lukens, and Kyle, Joseph and Juliet Crandall. Also surviving are her three sisters, Anne Moller and her husband Dan, Helen Abrams and her husband Renny and Lois Cassillo and her husband Joe. Her brother Walter and his wife Eleanor Carswellpredeceased Mary. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mary was a fun loving woman who enjoyed "catching up" with friends and meeting new friends. She enjoyed hearing people's life stories and typically remembered every conversation. She always looked forward to travelling to visit family and friends and just having a good time. For her 80th birthday Mary took on a challenge from one of her grandchildren and went skydiving. There are numerous similar stories. As one grandchild put it, "Gram liked to live life out loud." Per Mary's wishes there will be no service or calling hours. The family will host a celebration of life at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
