WATERVILLE - Mary Catherine Igel age 93 of Tower Streetformerly of Canadarago Street, Richfield Springs passed away peacefully on Saturday morning March 1, 2008 in Harding Nursing Home.
She was born on October 17, 1914 in Manchester, New Hampshire, daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie Zabawa Kula. As a young girl she and her family moved to Madison where she was raised and graduated from Madison High School.
On October 17, 1933 she was united in marriage with Frederick Igel in Oriskany Falls. They shared a loving and devoted union of forty-eight years until his passing in 1981. Together they owned and operated their dairy farm in West Exeter, retiring in September of 1975. That same year they moved to Richfield Springs where she resided until 2003.
Mrs. Igel had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Josephs Church Richfield Springs where she was active in the Rosary Altar Society. Mary will always be remembered as a person who found great joy working at home in her large vegetable garden as well as the many hours she spent canning not only for herself but her many friends as well. She was artistic and in her leisure time she could be found embroidering and quilting. To her family, cherished are the memories of the aromas of her baking and cooking that warmed her home and their hearts. She will be truly missed and never forgotten.
Surviving are a son Frederick Igel Jr. and his wife Mary of West Exeter, one daughter Nellie Frederick and her husband Richard of Madison, a grandson William Igel of West Exeter, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Frederick, she was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Kula, four sisters, Josephine Fariello, Stella Moon, Ann Huntley and Genevieve Kula.
Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, RichfieldSprings on Tuesday at 9:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Saint Josephs Church, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Terence Healy will officiate. Interment will be in Saint Josephs Cemetery later this spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm.
