HERKIMER-Mary Wiernicki, age 92, of 104 North Washington Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening September 15, 2012 in Folts Homes, Herkimer.
She was born on April 2, 1920 in a small rural town in, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Alex and Pearl Kadylak Salanco. A lifelong Herkimer resident, she was a graduate of Herkimer High School. On June 8, 1940, she was united in marriage with Mitchell Wiernicki in Saints Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, Herkimer. Together they shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-eight years until his passing on June 15, 2008.
Mrs. Wiernicki was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren who she saw almost daily at lunchtime and after school. She also shared a very special bond with her granddaughter Anna Stratton.
Mary had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Episcopal life. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer where she belonged to Saint Marys Guild. She at one time was a member of the Herkimer Hospital Guild, worked part time at the Herkimer Community Pharmacy and served as a teachers aide in the Mohawk School System. In her leisure time she found great joy in cooking and entertaining as well as those Bridge Parties with her friends, Marjorie Folts, Marylene Nagel and Dot Gabler. Mrs. Wiernicki will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person. She will be greatly missed.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, Richard M. and Sheila Wiernicki of Roebuck, SC, Kenneth A. and Louise Wiernicki of Herkimer, two brothers, Daniel Salanco of Little Falls, Andrew Salanco and his wife Betty of Newport, a sister, Helen Moulton of Seminole, FL, three grandchildren, Anna Stratton and her husband Brent of Shortsville, Mary Wiernicki of Columbia, SC and Michael Wiernicki of Charleston, SC, three great grandchildren, James Joseph Stratton, Matthew Thomas Stratton and Katherine Louise Stratton all of Shortsville. Several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Mitchell, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex, Stephen and Nicholas Salanco, one sister, Anna Weber and her cherished grandson, Ronald J. Wiernicki.
Funeral service with Holy Eucharist for Mrs. Wiernicki will be on Saturday at 11:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Very Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Christ Episcopal Church or the Ronald J. Wiernicki Athletic Scholarship Fund. Envelopes will be available at the Church Service.
