BURLINGTON - Mathilde Salamacha, 95, formerly of Salamacha Road, entered into eternal rest onThursday evening, July 29, 2004, at The Meadows, Cooperstown. Born on Feb. 24, 1909, in Oberschefflenz, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Karl and Kristina Zilling. Coming to America as a young girl she had lived in New York City. It was there that she met Steven Salamacha. They were married on Oct. 10, 1930. Mathilde and her husband moved to Hartwick in 1939 and established a dairy farm. They shared a devoted union of 69 years until his passing on Jan. 24, 2000.She enjoyed the tranquility of the country life, tending her garden, cooking and baking apple cakes from her favorite apple tree that grew outside her window. Her qualities were many, and people were drawn to her and her enduring nature. She was loved by many and easily returned everyone's kindness. She will be truly missed. She was a founding member of St. John's Lutheran Church of West Burlington.Surviving are a son and his wife, Richard and Judy Salamacha of Burlington; a daughter, Nancy C. Demerre and her husband George of Little Falls; a daughter-in-law, Rosalyn Salamacha of Hammond; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides her husband, Steven, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward S. Salamacha on July 28, 1999; four brothers and four sisters.The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Mathilde during her stay at Woodside Hall, The Meadows and the care given by Catskill Area Hospice. Their love and compassion will be cherished.Funeral service will be on Monday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service (from 1-2 p.m.)Expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.
