Obituary

Max Bermudez age 100 of Herkimer, beloved husband on Frances Kozakowski Bermudez, passed away on Saturday January 16, 2016 in Faxton-Saint Lukes Medical Center, New Hartford. He had the peace and comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on January 8, 1916 in Vieques, Puerto Rico, son of the late Eugene and Balbina Guadalupe Bermudez. Max was raised in Vieques and received his high school diploma there. On October 23, 1939 he married the former Josephine Thomasch in New York City. They shared loving union of fifty-two years until her passing on October 24, 1991. Mr. Bermudez was a proud veteran of World War II where he fought on under General George C. Patton at the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of a Purple Heart from that battle. He also fought in Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He was a radio operator and was awarded the America Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1945 attaining the rank of Tech 5. For thirty-three years he worked as a Supervisor for UNIVAC in Ilion, retiring in 1977. On November 19, 1993 he was united in marriage to Frances Kozakowski in Saint Anthonys Church in Herkimer. This blessed union brought much joy to them both as they resided both here and in Wildwood, FL. Mr. Bermudez had a strong belief God and was a member of the Church of Saints Anthony and Joseph, Herkimer. Max was a life member of the DeCarlo-Staffo American Legion Post #8, Little Falls and a member of the Michael Pliseck VFW Post # 4915, Herkimer. In his leisure time he was an avid golfer and played well into his ninetys. He had celebrated his 100th birthday with a surprise party attended by his many friends on Friday January 8th of this year in German Flatts. To all who knew him he exemplified the meaning of the Greatest Generation. He was an honest, humble and straight forward gentleman. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point yet you always felt his warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be truly missed. Surviving besides his wife of 22 years Frances are two sons Thomas Kozakowski of Endicott, Arthur Kozakowski and his wife Anna of Herkimer, a daughter, Patricia Sullivan and companion Mike Dychko of Herkimer, seven grandchildren, Brandon Kozakowski, Lauren Mellander and husband Josh, Samantha Kozakowski, David Kozakowski, Matthew Kozakowski and fianc Erin OBrien, Sean Sullivan and Ryan Sullivan, three great-grandchildren, Toree, Aryanna and Xoey, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours for Mr. Bermudez will be on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral from the funeral home will be on Thursday morning at 8:30 am. A funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday at 9:00 am in the Church of Saints Anthony and Joseph, Herkimer. Interment with military honors provided by the US Army, will be later this spring in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Memorial donations may be made to Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church or the Town of German Flatts Park, c/o 66 Main Street, Mohawk, NY 13407. The family would like to thank he staff of Superior Healthcare and the nursing staff and doctors of Faxton-St. Lukes Medical Center for the compassion and tender care given to Max and his family during his illness.
