HERKIMER-Michael Dennis Cross age 53, passed away peacefully on Friday evening October 30, 2015 in Faxton-Saint Luke's Medical Center, New Hartford, with his loving family at his side. He was born on June 9, 1962 in Herkimer, son of Dennis H. and Carol Gokey Cross. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was a graduate of Herkimer High School and attended Herkimer County Community College. On January 8, 1981 he enlisted in the US Navy. He was assigned to Whidbey Island, WA Naval Base and was a System Organizational Maintenance Technician. He served aboard the US Carrier Independence and was seriously injured and honorably discharged on December 17, 1982. He returned to Herkimer and went to work for Herkimer Area Resource Center as a Senior Supervisor. He held that position until he retired in 1999 due to poor health. Mike had a strong love for the outdoors and was a member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. To all who knew him he was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially, his cherished daughter Emily Mae. No matter what challenges he encountered through the years he faced them with courage and dignity. He will be sadly missed by all. Surviving him are his loving daughter Emily Mae Cross of Herkimer, his parents Carol and Dennis Cross of Herkimer, one brother, David A. Cross and his wife Elyse and their daughter Jacquelyn of Norwalk, CT. His is also survived by his cousins Cheryl Gokey, Daniel and his wife Tiffany Brown and family, Denise Brown, Douglas Brown, and John Gokey Jr. His uncles Alan Cross and his wife Bettie along with their family, Jeffrey and Lisa, Ronald Cross with his wife Kathryn and their son Jeffery, John Gokey Sr. and his wife Charlotte, and Alfred Gokey. He was preceded in death by an aunt Ruth Gokey, two cousins, Barbara Perkins and Eric Cross. Calling hours for Mr. Cross will take place on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:30 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A funeral service will follow immediately after the at 7:30 pm with the Reverend Jill Farnham-Us officiating Interment with military honors accorded by the US Navy will be in Mohawk Cemetery on Tuesday November 10th. at 2:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Activities Fund at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, New York. The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford for the care and compassion shown to Michael during his stay. It will never be forgotten.
