HERKIMER - Mildred A. Chaffers age 87 of Nathan Galansky Apartments formerly of Jordanville entered into eternal rest on Sunday January 2, 2005 in University Hospital, Syracuse. She was born on January 18, 1917 in Little Falls, daughter of the late Paul and Anna Klasovitna Checko. Mildred was raised in both Little Falls and VanHornsville and was also educated there. As a young woman she went to work in New York City. It was there that she met Edward D. Chaffers . They were married on August 5, 1939 in Saint Margarets Church in Little Village, Long Island. In 1942 they returned to this area. Her husband preceded her in death on April 27, 1994. For twenty-five years she worked for UNIVAC, retiring in 1970. Mrs. Chaffers was a member of the Mohawk United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Widowed Persons Services. Mildred will always be remembered for her warm smile. She was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving are her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sam and Dorothy Chaffers of New Jersey, a sister-in-law Sonia Zeman of Herkimer, several nieces and nephews including Dorothy and her husband Charles Miller, Robert and his wife Beverly Zeman, Richard and Sandra Zeman, several great-nieces, nephews, and great, great-nieces and nephews and her good friend Milton Knox of Mohawk. Besides her parents and husband Edward she was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street Herkimer. The Reverend Deborah Wollaber will officiate. Mrs. Chaffers will be laid to rest with her husband in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville later this spring. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday morning one hour prior to the funeral service (10:00 to 11:00 am).
