Obituary

HERKIMER-Mildred Finster Gloo age 78 Entered into eternal rest on Thursday morning September 23, 2004 after a prolonged illness. Born in Ilion on August 29, 1926, the only child of Ira and Amy Johnson Finster. Millie graduated from Mohawk schools and in 1944 from the Utica School of Commerce. She worked for many years in the guidance office at Herkimer High School and later in the offices of Gloo & Gloo Insurance in Herkimer. At the age of thirteen, Millie met Philip Gloo of Herkimer at the skating rink on the Herkimer football field. They were to become the lifelong loves of each others lives, marrying on Columbus Day in 1946, after Phil had returned from the European Theatre in World War II. After living briefly in Mohawk, the couple made their home in Herkimer for more than fifty years. Millie sang in local church choirs and taught Sunday school at the Herkimer Methodist Church when her children were young. She enjoyed knitting and solving crosswords, but mostly she loved being with her family and friends and it is for that which she will be remembered best. For nearly forty years, Millie suffered with progressive Multiple Sclerosis that eventually left her bedridden. But with Phil as her constant partner she led an active and involved life that included a wide circle of family and friends. She possessed both down-to-earth understanding and an Insightful wit that could reduce the most complex situation to something manageable. We should all be blessed with her natural grace. Millie and Phil had been married fifty-one years when Phil died in 1998. Since then Millie has resided at Valley Health Services. She is survived by her three children, Linda and her husband Jim Leach of Hamilton, Larry and his wife Chris Gloo of Orchard Park and Lorrie Hill of Owego, six grandchildren, Travis Leach of Boston, Darcie Leach Loveless and her husband Dave of Hamilton, Tyler Leach of Mystic, CT, Sarah Gloo of Denver, CO, Adam Gloo of Buffalo, Corey Hill of Owego, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jerry and Linda Gloo of North Eastham, MA and their sons Paul, Jim and Eric, many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends in the Mohawk Valley and beyond. Funeral service will take place on Monday at 11:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Patti Lawrence will officiate. Immediately following the service Mrs. Gloo will be laid to rest with her husband in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives on Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. The family requests memorial donations to the Upstate Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1650 South Avenue, Suite 100. Rochester, NY 14620.
