CLEARWATER, Fla. - Mildred E. Maxfield, 81, a former resident of Herkimer, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in Mease Continuing Care Center, Dunedin, Fla.
She was born March 11, 1924, in Ilion, the daughter of the late Reed and Myrtle (Boorn) Thomas. On June 3, 1944, she married Clarence E. Maxfield in Frankfort. They shared a loving and devoted marriage of 45 years until his passing on April 2, 1989. For many years Mildred worked as a registered nurse in Herkimer Memorial Hospital and Mohawk Valley General Hospital before retiring in 1968. In 1969, she and her husband retired to Florida.She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dunedin, former Boy Scout den mother, member and past president of SPARC (Special People Assisting Retarded Children) and a member of Evening Star Valley Chapter 82 Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years.Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Salanco, Darlene Covington and her husband Scott, all of Lady Lake, Fla., Cheryl Hancock and her husband Rob of Summerfield, Fla.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two nieces, three nephews and seven cousins.Besides her husband, Clarence, she was predeceased by her two sons, Thomas R. in 1958, James E. in 1982 and her brother, Reed Thomas.A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 23, at 1 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Patricia Lawrence, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Herkimer, will officiate.Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
