HERKIMER - Milo M. Getman age 88 of 315 North Prospect Street (Midtown Apartments) formerly of Route # 168 Mohawk, passed away on Thursday afternoon July 5, 2007 in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.
He was born on April 5, 1919 in Herkimer son of the late Frank J. and Belle Morey Getman. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. On February 12, 1944 he answered the call of his country entering the US Army. During World War II he served in the Rhineland, Germany where he earned the EAME Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on May 9, 1946 attaining the rank of Tech-5.
Upon returning home from his military service, he went to work for the Library Bureau in Herkimer as a custom woodworker. Proud of his thirty-six years of faithful service, he retired in 1983. For many years Mr. Getman had lived in Cedarville before moving to Mohawk in 2000.
Milo was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer and a charter member and past commander of the East Herkimer Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his leisure time he found relaxation and took great joy in woodworking. Over the years much of his folk art could be found at various craft shows throughout the valley.
To all who knew him they will remember a strong willed man that enjoyed his many friends and loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his son Frank J. Getman of Mohawk, a daughter Linda Marie Looman and her husband Robert of James Store, VA, nine grandchildren, Matthew, Jason, and Kristen Looman, Alan, Danna, Corey, Sarah-Jane and Benjamin Getman and Karen Lindberg along with eleven great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Rodney Joseph Getman.
Funeral service will be on Sunday at 4:00 m in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, and Herkimer. Interment with military honors will take place at a later time and at the convenience of the family. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday two hours prior to the funeral service (2:00 to 4:00 pm). Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorials donations to the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of East Herkimer Post #6531 V.F.W. are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. for ritualistic services.
