RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Milton Stretch Carr age 86 passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening August 29, 2011 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born January 26, 1925 in the town of Middlefield son of the late Charles and Effie Eckler Ferris.Stretch was raised in Milford and educated in Cooperstown Schools. On March 30, 1943 he joined the U.S Army and was assigned to drive a supply truck through much of war-torn Europe and England for the remaining years of the war. He was a participant in the Battle of the Bulge and received five battle stars during his enlistment. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1945. Stretch later worked for many years at Bruce Hall, Inc. in Cooperstown and subsequently managed Otsego Ready Mix in Oneonta before retiring in 1988.
Mr. Carr was a member of the Cooperstown American Legion Post. He was mechanically gifted and in his leisure time found much enjoyment repairing lawn mowers for many of his friends and neighbors.Stretch will always be remembered as caring man who was always willing to help and looked for nothing in return.He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family.
He is Survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Sally, his three sons and their wives; David and Patricia Carr of Milford, Dennis and Ruth Carr of Davenport, Stanley and Cathy Carr of Cary, IL, three Step-daughters ; Linda White and her husband, Robert of Columbia, SC, Diann Krause of Germany, Patrica Pawling and her husband, Thomas. Of Charlotte, NC, Stretch also leaves behind two nieces; Janet Oxborrow and Mary Lou Eastman, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Carr and a sister Edna Harrison.
Funeral service will be on Friday at 11:00 am in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs.The Reverend Deborah Waldron, Pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs will officiate.Interment service with military honors will follow in the Westville Cemetery, Westville, NY.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm.
