Obituary

HERKIMER-Mitchell Wiernicki age 90 of Margaret Street passed away peacefully on Sunday morning June 15, 2008 in Valley Health Services Inc. He was born on October 19, 1917 in Little Falls, son of the late Henry and Alexandria Pupeck Wiernicki. A lifelong area resident, Mitch was raised in Little Falls and graduated from Little Falls High School. A World War II veteran he served with the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 8, 1940 he was united in marriage with the former Mary Salanco in Sts.Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, Herkimer. It was that year that they made their permanent home in Herkimer. For twenty-five years Mr. Wiernicki worked for UNIVAC. He was known for being an accomplished tool & dye maker and was a member of the engineering staff at UNIVAC. He retired from UNIVAC in 1979 as Tool Room Foreman. Mitchell had a strong belief in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer where he had served as a Vestryman. Proud of his heritage, he spoke fluent Polish. As a young man he took advanced courses in speaking Polish at classes held in the Polish National Catholic Church in Little Falls. An avid northern hunter and fisherman, he cherished the time he spent in the pristine beauty and nature of the Adirondack Mountains hunting Deer and fishing for Brook Trout. In his leisure time he liked to tinker and had a unique ability at either fixing or making just about anything you could think of. To all who knew him they will remember a humble, caring and loving man who was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-eight years Mary, two sons and their wives, Richard M. and Sheila Wiernicki of Roebuck, SC, Kenneth A. and Louise Wiernicki of Herkimer, three grandchildren, Anna Stratton and her husband Brent of Manchester, Mary Wiernicki of Columbia, SC, Michael Wiernicki of Charleston, SC, two step-granddaughters and their husbands, Linda and Jim Krukowski of Midland, MI, Leigh and Jason Dunaway of Duncan, SC, a great-grandson, James Joseph Stratton of Manchester, three brothers, Vincent Wiernicki of Bluff City, TN, Zygmunt and his wife Frances Wiernicki of Marcy, William Wiernicki of Ilion, Witold Vete and his wife Ellen Wiernicki of Mohawk, numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Ronald J. Wiernicki in 1997, two brothers, Stanley and Henry Wiernicki and a sister, Sophie Henzel. Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be on Friday at 11:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Paul Bailey, Rector will officiate. Interment with military honors in Oak Hill Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer or the Ronald J. Wiernicki Athletic Award. Envelopes will be available at the church service. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Valley Health Services for their compassionate care during Mitchells stay. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
