Obituary

HERKIMER – Nancy Jean Conkling, age 92, of West Lake Avenue, passed away on January 10, 2025 at The Grand Rehabilitation Center, located in Ilion, NY. Nancy was born on June 26, 1932 in Herkimer a daughter of the late Lewis and Hazel Scott Clements. She was raised in Herkimer and then Richfield Springs, attending school in both communities. On June 25, 1955 she married William Conkling in Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer, a blessed and loving union of fifty-seven years until his passing on January 6, 2013. For over twenty-five years Nancy worked as an assembler for Mohawk Data Sciences in Herkimer. She had a very strong belief in God and was a very active member Christ Episcopal Church in Herkimer. She taught Sunday School for thirty years and was the cook for many church dinners and bake sales. Nancy loved to spend summers camping with family and friends on lakes throughout the region. Her true passion was her love of cooking and baking. Her meals were legendary especially holiday offerings that included desserts fit for a king. She hosted a Monday Night card group of family and friends for many years strengthening the bonds and sharing many laughs. She was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving her are a son Gordon Conkling and his wife Kay of Erie, Pennsylvania, her loving daughter-in-law Ruth, four grandchildren; Nancy Jones, Eric Madison, Adam Conkling, , Shelby Conkling, six great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons; William Conkling and Alvin Madison, two brothers; Lewis Clements, Jr. and Fred Clements, three sisters; Elizabeth Eggleston, Louise Ainsworth, and Florence Loomis. The family would like to recognize her nephew Jerry Eggleston for his weekly phone calls to her for years that were a highlight of her Sunday evening. A special thanks to her nephew Mark Ainsworth that spent countless hours visiting her weekly at the nursing care. The family would like to thank all the compassionate caregivers that cared for Nancy during her time at the facility, especially her last week. A special thanks to Deb, Elsie, and Terri from the Activities Department that helped facilitate communication during COVID and for family members unable to visit in person because of the distance from the facility. Calling hours for Mrs. Conkling will take place on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00pm and funeral service to following calling hours in Fenner Funeral Home Inc. 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Burial to take place in the spring in Mohawk Cemetery at which time the family will host a reception to celebrate Nancy. In lieu of flowers, the family is recommending donations to the Alzheimer's Association of Central New York. Calling hours
