Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Naomi H. Schneider, 77, of Woodland Road, died peacefully on Friday morning, August 31, 2001, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. She was born on May 12, 1924, in Hopbottom, PA a daughter of the late Walter and Velma Little Hoppe. Raised and educated in Pennsylvania, she graduated from Nicholson High School, Nicholson, PA. Continuing her education, she graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. She later earned her Masters Degree from Adelphi University, Long Island. On July 23, 1955, she married George Schneider. For over 37 years she enjoyed a rewarding teaching career with the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, Long Island focusing on elementary education. In the 1970s her primary teaching was in special education until her retiring in 1988. The family had spent over 40 years of summer vacations at their camp on Lake Canadrago. After her retirement, Naomi and her husband moved to Richfield Springs, spending the winter months with each of their five children. For 63 years she had been involed with the Grange. She was a current member of the Otsego/Susquahanna Valley Grange #1417 receiving a 50 year member recognition in 2000, a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Assoc., an alumni of S.U.N.Y. and a member of the Mask and Hammer Society theater group of Oneonta State University. A fun loving person she had many diverse interests. Reading, traveling, cross-stitch, sewing costumes for the childrens school plays, swimming, cooking and putting on skits for the Grange where among her leisure time pleasures. She was an avid sports fan, enjoying all sports especially baseball, basketball and football. She was an accomplished vocalist and musician who played the piano as well as the tuba. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, George, two sons and their wives, Timothy and Shirley Valdez-Hall, of Littleton, CO, George M. and Janet Schneider of York South Carolina; three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Douglas White of Rome, Jean and Carl Coakley Jr. of King George, VA, Madeline and Thomas J. Mills, Jr., of Lynbrook; seven grandchildren, Melissa and Andrew White, Amanda, Timothy and Damien Roser, Katie Coakley and Sean Mills; five great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren, six step great-grandchilren, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Esther Robinson and Mary Jerauld. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 8th at 10:00 am. in St.Peters Church, Rome. The Reverend Hearn, pastor will officiate. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours Memorial donation may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Transfiguration Catholic School, 400 South James Street, Rome, NY 13440. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs, NY.
