HERKIMER-Nicola Spagnolo age 91 of Marion Street passed away peacefully on Friday morning July 1, 2011 in the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on March 4, 1920 in Oria, Italy, son of the late Angelo and Anna Aurelia Adamo Spagnolo. Nick was raised and educated in Brindisi. He with his family, came to America in the late 1940s, settling in Little Falls. On October 12, 1947 he was united in marriage with Sylvia Peruzzi in Rome, Italy. They made their home in Little Falls until 1963 when they moved to Herkimer and have resided there since. For twenty-seven years Mr. Spagnolo owned and operated Nicks Barber Shop in Herkimer. He retired in 1985 when he turned the business over to his son, Angelo.
He had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. He also held memberships in the Knights of Columbus Council # 579, the Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1439 and the DeCarlo-Staffo American Legion Post # 100 Little Falls. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing golf and bowling.
To all who knew him they will forever remember a generous, kind hearted gentleman who was loved and respected by everyone. He will be missed by his many friends and family, especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving besides his devoted wife of sixty-three years, Sylvia, are a son, Angelo Spagnolo and his wife Ruth of Little Falls, three daughters, Anna A. Spagnolo and her husband Robert Podgurski of Herkimer, Isabella Crandall and her husband Charles E. Crandall III of Herkimer, Diana Burns of Jupiter, FL, one brother-in law, Alvaro Peruzzi of Little Falls, twelve grandchildren, Sylvia George, Angelo Spagnolo and his wife Renee, Brian Stefka and fianc Jennifer DeJesus, Michelle Stefka-Mouchantaf and her husband Fares, Christopher Stefka, Charles E. Crandall IV and his fianc Natalie Cox, Nicole Crandall, Shane Crandall, Matthew Burns, Sarah Burns, Nathan Burns and Zachary Burns, four great grandchildren, Joseph Spagnolo, David George, Steven George and Nicolas Mouchantaf, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by fourteen brothers and sisters.The family will be present at the Fenner Funeral Home Inc. 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Monday, July 4, from 6:00 until 9:00 pm. Funeral will begin from the funeral home on Tuesday, July 5, at 10:30 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 am in Saint Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Saint Marys Cemetery, Little Falls. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council # 579 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 pm for ritualistic services.Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center Memory Garden. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family of Nicola Spagnolo is deeply grateful to the staff of the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center for the personalized, loving care given Nicola for nearly 2 years.
