Obituary

MOHAWK - Josie Norene Egbert, age 99, of Hinman Road passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 9, 2007, in the Van Rensselaer Manor in Troy. She was born June 25, 1907, in Amarillo, Texas, daughter of the late John Henry and Osella Latta Lawrence. Eight years later they returned to the family farm in Water Valley, Kentucky. Norene graduated Salutatorian from Water Valley High School in l924 and attended secretarial school in Clinton, Ky. She worked as a legal secretary for a state legislator in Clinton, Kentucky and in the State Legislature in Lexington. In l934 during the depression, she joined many others from across the country who moved to Washington, D. C. to join President Roosevelts New Deal Administration. She worked as a stenographer for the Federal Home Loan Bank Administration until l945. On August 15, 1942 Norene was united in marriage with William R. Egbert in Washington, D. C. A loving and devoted union of twenty-eight years until his passing on July 6, 1971. Norene moved to Herkimer in l945 and with her husband built a home on Hinman Road south of Mohawk in l958 where she resided until 2006. For the last 20 years she shared her home with her sister, Alliene Lawrence. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls, the Hill Toppers and the Minnowbrook Garden Club. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and at Folts Homes. She was a wonderful cook and dressmaker, and enjoyed music, reading and traveling. To those who knew her they will forever remember a loving friend who always thought of others first. Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Kresky (and her partner Mark Picard) of New York City and Francille Egbert of Sand Lake; and three grandchildren, Patrick Picard of Boston, Dan Ruckdeschel of New York City and Emily Ruckdeschel, M.D. of Rochester. Beside her parents and husband, William Ritchie Egbert, two brothers, James Alexander Lawrence, and John Thomas Lawrence and two sisters, Willie Hester Lawrence and Alliene Belle Lawrence, predeceased her. Funeral service will be on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday two hours prior to the funeral service (11:00 to 1:00 pm). Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
