HERKIMER-Norma Jean Foster age 83 of Protection Avenue Passed away on Tuesday morning January 20, 2015 in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on September 9, 1931 in the town of Herkimer, daughter of the late Milo and Mabel Hall Smith. A lifelong Herkimer resident she graduated from Herkimer High School with the class of 1948. At one time she was married to Donald Foster. They owned and operated the Don-Nor Dairy Farm in Herkimer until 1973. For over seventeen years Norma was a housekeeper at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home in Ilion. She retired in 2001. Mrs. Foster had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. In her leisure time she enjoyed following her beloved "Buffalo Bills" never missing their games on Television. She was also a devoted country music fan, especially listening to Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubb and of course her dear brother Ronnie Smith. To all who knew Norma they will never forget a kind, caring and generous lady with an unforgettable smile. She will be truly missed by her many friends and family. Surviving are three sons, Dennis P. Foster and his wife Mary Ann, David E. Foster all of Herkimer, Jason W. Foster of Grass Lake, MI, a daughter Diane Lynn Irving and her husband James of Aurora, CO., one sister, Beverly N. Lyga of East Herkimer, four sisters-in-law, Delores Smith, Marlene Smith, Jackie Smith, and Phyllis Smith several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins and her best friend, Ernie the cat. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, Adelbert "Skip" Smith, John C. Smith, Ronald E. "Ronnie" Smith, and William "Willie" Smith, a brother-in-law Frank Lyga and a grandson Nicholas Foster. Calling hours for Mrs. Foster will be on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A funeral service will follow immediately after in the funeral home at 7:00 pm with the Reverend Janet Gleason, pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls officiating. Interment will be later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer County Humane Society or the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Mohawk Valley Health Center and Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Intensive Care and Special Recovery Units for the exceptional care given to Norma during this difficult time.
