TARBORO,NC-Olive Caroline Brown Gibbs, age 85, of Tarboro formerly of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Thursday June 18, 2009, in North Carolina.
She was born in Herkimer on February 18, 1924, a daughter of the late Arthur and Caroline Brown. Raised and educated in Herkimer she graduated from Herkimer High School in 1941. She continued hereducation at Oswego Teachers College, graduating in 1942. She taught elementary school in New York Statebefore going to Japan to teach at Ashiya Air Base. It was while living in Japanthat Olive met her lifetime soul mate Virgil Richard Gibbs. They were married at the Ashiya Air Base in November of 1949. Upon their return to the United States they made their home in Herkimer, later adding a summer home at Cedar Lake. For over thirty years she taught with the Herkimer School System as an elementary teacher in East Herkimer and later with BOCES in special education.
Olive was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer where she was active with the United Methodist Womens group and a Youth Fellowship advisor. For many years she was active with scouting serving as a Brownie troop leader and Cub Scout den mother. She had been a past member of the Herkimer Order of the Easter Star and the Order of the Amaranth.
Olive was gifted with many talents. As a high school student she did the art work for the yearbooks and in later years she enjoyed painting with oils and watercolors. She enjoyed sewing and knitting especially for her grandchildren. She touched the lives of many and will always be remembered as a caring and helpful person. She will be greatly missed especially by her family.
In 1984 Olive and Virgil moved to Florida, residing in Sun City Center for twenty three years. Their retirement years were enjoyable and active with motor home travel throughout the United Statesas well as traveling abroad to many counties including the Czech Republic, Vienna,Budapest, Scotland,England and China. They also enjoyed several cruises including a cruise on the Mediterranean Sea. In 2007 they moved to Tarboro, North Carolinaand had resided there since.
Surviving are her loving husband of 59 years Virgil, one son, Richard Gibbs and his wife Martha of Oneida, two daughters, Carol Longwell and her husband John of Herkimer, Nancy Worsinger and her husband Richard of Rocky Mt. N. Carolina, a brother, Arthur Brown and his wife Ester of Herkimer, a sister Helen Stewart of Boyton Beach. FL, six grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Gibbs of Oneida, Charles Longwell and his wife Tonia of Mohawk, Sherri Pearson and her husband Joe of Tampa, Fl. and Christopher Worsiinger and Elizabeth Worsinger of Rocky Mt., ten great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church Herkimer, Prospect Streetwith the Reverend Janet Gleason, pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedar Lake Cemetery. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Cotnam Fellowship Hall of the church from 1:00 2:00 p.m. (one hour prior to the memorial service) for fellowship and refreshments.
