Owen E. Doolen, age 73, of Herkimer, New York, passed away peacefully at Wynn Hospital on Sunday, August 9, 2026, after a short illness.
Born on April 1, 1953, in Utica, New York—yes, an April Fool’s baby—Owen was lovingly raised by his maternal grandparents, Marion and Richard Williams. He graduated from Ilion High School with the Class of 1971, where he enjoyed playing football.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Owen proudly served in the U.S. Army, including a period stationed in Germany. Throughout his life, he held various jobs in the Mohawk Valley.
Owen was predeceased by his wife, Linda Griffin Doolen, in 1994, and by his grandparents, Marion and Richard Williams. He is survived by his three beloved daughters: Tammy (Chris) Bell of North Carolina, Melissa Doolen of Herkimer, and Tiffany (Jason) Robinson of Herkimer. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Brian Warn, Emily Warn, Lexie Heidrich, Tanner Heidrich, and Michael Robinson.
Owen was part of a large extended family that included eight siblings. Surviving him are Ed Doolen of Sauquoit, Lester Doolen of Frankfort, Darlene (Douglas) Bauer of Guilderland, Christine Lamberson of Texas, Al Doolen of Scotia, Deborah (Richard) Stacks of Florida, Patricia (Martin) Ruller of Utica, and Barry Doolen of Herkimer. Over the years, the siblings developed warm and affectionate bonds. He is also remembered by his special friend Ray Liszewski, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In accordance with Owen’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. The family will gather privately to celebrate his life.
