ILION - Paul M. Breish, age 82, formerly of Goodell Avenue, Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning October 7, 2007 in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home.
He was born on September 27, 1925, in Herkimer, a son of the late Arthur L. and Ruby E. Davis Breish. A lifelong Herkimer resident he graduated Herkimer High School with the class of 1943. On August 15, 1947 he was united in marriage to the former Anna N. Dzula in Roanoke, VA. A loving and devoted union of fifty-nine years, Mrs. Breish preceded him in death on June 10, 2007.
On April 15, 1947 he enlisted in the US Army where he served at Arlington Hall Station in Arlington, VA. He was honorably discharged on January 25, 1950 attaining the rank of Sgt. Upon completing his military service he worked for the town of Warren Highway Department until 1954. He then went to work for the US Postal Service first in Herkimer, as a letter carrier and later served as the Post Master of the Jordanville Post Office from 1974 until his retirement in 1981.
Paul had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Herkimer. For over 40 years he was an active member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge No. 1439 BPOE where he had served as chairman of the House Committee and past trustee of the lodge. In 1986-87 he was honored by the lodge being named was Elk of the Year. He had served as coach of the lodge ritual team that won the National Ritualistic Championship 1996.
Paul will always be remembered as a quiet man, a good listener and a compassionate man who enjoyed being with his many friends. He will be greatly missed
Surviving are his two daughter, Johann Kenna and her husband Michael of Puyallup WA, Jeanette Breish and her husband Robert Schenk of Mohawk, two grandchildren, Kevan Kenna and his wife Robin, Emily Kenna all of Tacoma, WA, one great-granddaughter, Tiffany Kenna of Las Vegas, NV, several nieces, nephews and cousins among them are Gordon Joe Hoke and his wife Cathy of Richfield Springs, Allan Hoke of Herkimer, Martha Bronner and her husband Darwin of Van Hornesville. Besides his parents and wife Anna he was preceded in death by his brother Harold Breish and his sister Madelyn Econome.
Funeral service will be on Monday October 15th at 12 noon in Fenner Funeral Home, 115 Court Street. The Reverend Patricia Lawrence of the First Baptist Church Herkimer will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Mt. View Memorial Gardens.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 10:00 am 12 noon. (two hours prior to the funeral service).
Memorial donation may be made to the First Baptist Church or Mohawk Valley Nursing Home. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of the Herkimer Elks Lodge No. 1439 BPOE are asked to meet at the funeral home on Monday at 11:00 am for ritualistic services.
