Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Peter F. Weiss Jr. age 82 of Richfield Hill Road passed away on Wednesday morning March 30, 2011 in his home after an extended illness. He had the comfort of loving family at his side. A lifelong area resident he was born on June 20, 1928 in Frankfort, son of the late Peter F. Sr. and Shirley Jones Weiss. His education started in a one room school house on Frankfort Hill and went on to Utica Proctor High School. After high school he worked as a self-employed dairy farmer in VanHornesville until the start of the Korean War in 1950 when he enlisted in the US Army. He served with the 25th Infantry Division where he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 16, 1952 attaining the rank of Corporal. On November 27, 1954 he was united in marriage with the former Bernice Folts in Saint Theresas Church, Frankfort Center. They made their home in VanHornesville until 1956 when they purchased their own dairy farm in the town of Columbia, known today as the Weiss Dairy Farm. Mr. Weiss had a true sense of community; he had served as Town Health Officer, Town Assessor and was currently on the Board of Review for the town of Columbia. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, bullhead fishing, trapping and riding about on his Kubota. He also took great pride in his collection of Allis Chalmers Tractors which he personally restored. To all who knew him, Pete was a down to earth man. Any conversation with him was frank and to the point but you always felt a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.
