RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Raymond J. Urbiss age 72 of Marble Road passed away Monday morning August 19, 2013 in Alpine Skilled Nursing Facility after a lengthy illness.He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
Ray was born on May 14, 1941 in Little Falls, son of the late John and Mary Grace Houghtaling Urbiss.He was raised in Little Falls where he graduated from Saint Marys Academy. On May 31, 1960 he entered the US Army was stationed in Fort Monmouth, NJ where he earned a medal for Expert Marksmanship with the M-14 Rifle.He was honorably discharged on May 29, 1963 attaining the rank of Specialist First Class.
On July 3, 1971 he was united in marriage with the former Marilyn Miller in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer. For over twenty-five years, Mr. Urbiss was employed as a lineman for the Niagara Mohawk Company retiring in 1996. Ray always enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing and working on the family home on Canadrago Lake. He especially enjoyed his hunting times with his good friend Leon Becker.
To all who knew him they will never forget his sharp wit and great sense of humor.
Surviving are his devoted wife of forty-two years Marilyn, two sons, David Urbiss of St. Petersburg, FL, Brent Smith and wife Lynne of Richfield Springs, three daughters, Shelly Schwasnick and husband Kirk of Mohawk, Kristen Urbiss of Richfield Springs, Jennifer Benedict and husband Butch of Little Falls, two sisters, Margaret and Tim Metot of Little Falls, Nancy and Lynn Richards of Dolgeville, seven grandchildren, Matthew Urbiss, Lindsey Suarez, Meghan Walsh, Rebecca, Karlie, Kristen and Eric Schwasnick, two great grandchildren,Xavier and Layla Suarez of St. Petersburg, FL, several nieces, nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Urbiss.
Calling hours for Mr. Urbiss will be on Saturday August 24th, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home with Pastor Sharon Rankins-Burd officiating.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Schuyler Lake United Methodist Rebuilding Fund or the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
