Obituary

WEST EXETER - Reginald Clarence Scanlon Skip age 63 of County Highway # 22 passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday June 30, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer.He had the comfort and support of his loving family at his side. Skip was born on August 13, 1949 in Tupper Lake, son of Reginald T. Scanlon and the late Betty J. Wellington Scanlon.A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Herkimer.After a twenty-three courtship he married the former Carol K. Hume on August 11, 2001 in Bridgewater. They made their home in Bridgewater until 2003 when they moved to West Exeter. Mr. Scanlon was employed by the Village of Herkimer.He first worked as the Superintendent of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association and then moved on to the Department of Public Works, spending ten years in the Street Department and the past eleven years at the Water Department. He retired on December 31, 2011 after more than twenty-one years of dedicated service. He had a strong love for the outdoors and in his leisure time enjoyed hunting. When he was at home he found much relaxation and satisfaction in carpentry and woodworking. To all who knew Skip he will always be remembered as a down to earth, caring and honest man. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point but you always felt a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him.He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family especially his thirteen grandchildren. Surviving besides his loving wife Carol, are three sons and their wives, Shawn Berberick and wife Erica Hutton of Niskayuna, Robert Piersma Jr. and wife Cisco, of Cassville, Brian Piersma and wife Teresa of Oriskany Falls, a daughter Kimberly Baker of Edmeston, his father, Reginald T. Scanlon of West Winfield, two brothers and their wives, Dennis Scanlon and wife Sandy of Liverpool, Todd Scanlon and wife Barb of West Winfield, one sister, Sue Bongiorno of Herkimer, two brother-in-laws, Dennis E. Hume and his wife Mary of Mount Vision, Bruce Hume of Edmeston, two step sisters, Josephine Boswell of West Winfield, Mitzi Decker and her husband Darryl of North Dakota, thirteen grandchildren, Taylor Berberick, Keith Baker, Kevin Baker Codi Baker, Geoff Hutton, Kody Hutton, Ashleigh Hutton, Amber Piersma, Arjay Piersma, Kyra Piersma, Daniel Piersma, Brett Piersma, Bradley Sweet, several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as his canine companions Sassy and Ollie. He was predeceased by his mother Betty J. Scanlon and his stepmother Sophy Scanlon. Calling hours for Mr. Scanlon will take place on Wednesday from 3:00 until 6:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. A funeral service will follow at the conclusion of calling hours at 6:00 pm. Interment will take place at a later time to be announced.Memorial donations may be made to the West Exeter Fire Department or your local human society.Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
