WEST WINFIELD-Reginald Thomas Scanlon age 91 passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning April 18, 2018 in Homelife at Folts, Herkimer. He had the support of his loving family at his side.
He was born on May 31, 1926, in Gray, son of the late William L. and Bertha E. Graves Scanlon. He was raised and educated in Tupper Lake. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the US Army Air Corps serving in World War II. After his military service he worked for Standard Furniture, Mohawk Data Sciences and the Library Bureau. After his retirement in 1989 he continued his education at Mohawk Valley Community College where he received an Associate Degree. On February 22, 1961 he was united in marriage to the former Sophy Pavlot in the First United Methodist Church in Herkimer. The Reverend Fred Cotnamofficiated. They moved to West Winfield where they shared a loving and devoted union of forty-nine years. Mrs. Scanlon passed away on July 31, 2010. Mr. Scanlon had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. He was a member of Saint Joseph the Worker RC Church in West Winfield. Reggie was proud of his membership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4915 in Herkimer where he had served as Post Commander and various other offices. He was active in the Boy Scouts where he belonged to the Order of the Arrow at Camp Russell and also traveled to Philmont, NM with the scouts at their annual Jamboree. A volunteer Fire Fighter he was a member of the West Winfield Volunteer Fire Department and had served as their treasurer. Mr. Scanlon will always be remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather and great-grandfather and a great great grandfather who loved and adored his family. He was a kind man with an unforgettable smile he will be sadly missed.
Surviving him are two sons , Todd Scanlon and his wife Barbara of West Winfield, Dennis Scanlon and his wife Sandy of Liverpool, three daughters, Josephine Boswell of West Winfield, Mitzi Decker of West Winfield, and Sue Ellen Bongiorno of Herkimer, a daughter-in-law Carol Scanlon of West Exeter, two sisters, Tillie Thompson of Herkimer, Nona Cumm of WV, many many grandchildren, and many great and great great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Sophy, he was preceded in death by his son Reginald Skip Scanlon in 2013, and three sisters, Alta Cool, Ruth Cumm and Beverly Stagliano. Two brothers, Donald and William Scanlon.
Calling hours for Mr. Scanlon will be on Tuesday from 3:00 until 5:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A funeral service will follow immediately after in the funeral home at 5:30 pm with Father Silvaster Sarihaddulaofficiating. Interment will be in Cedarville Cemetery at a later time to be announced.
