Obituary

Richfield Springs - Richard L. Clayton, age 94, of the Bronner Street Apartments formerly of Williams Street, entered into eternal rest on Monday October 6, 2003 in Bassett Healthcare Cooperstown as a result of injuries sustained an automobile accident. He was born on August 20, 1909 in Ilion a son of the late Louis and Florence Fish Clayton. A lifelong area resident, Richard was an honorably discharged US Army veteran of World War II. On June 25, 1935 he married Hazel M. Chapin in East Springfield. They shared a loving and devoted union of 58 years until her passing on January 8, 1993. He and his wife owned and operated the Birmingham Service Station and Restaurant on Routes 20 and 51 in West Winfield. In 1949 he purchased the Richfield Springs Mobil Station, retiring in 1972. Dick was a quiet, gentle man who was admired and respected by all in the community. He will be greatly missed. He was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs and for many years volunteered at Bassett Healthcare Cooperstown. He is survived by a brother Robert Clayton of Denver CO. a sister Nellie Clappsaddle of Cooperstown and one nephew Bernard Chapin of Baldwinsville. Besides his parents and wife Hazel, he was preceded in death by his sister Nina French in 2002 and a nephew Duane Chapin. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday at 11:00 am in Fly Creek Cemetery. The Reverend William Harkins, Pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs will officiate. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
