MOHAWK-Richard William Lewis Sr. age 52 of East Center Street passed away on Wednesday afternoon February 9, 2011.
He was born on December 2, 1958 in Rochester, son of the late Agnes Kuroski. Richard was raised and educated in Herkimer. An US Navy veteran, he entered the military service on December 8, 1976. He first served aboard the USS Fearless and later aboard the USS Dahlgren. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Battle Efficiency E Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Sharpshooter Award. He was honorably discharged on June 16, 1986 at the Naval Station at Norfolk, VA, attaining the rank of HT 1.
After his military career he returned to Little Falls where he went to work as a welder for the Feldmeier Equipment Company. In 2004 he moved to Mohawk coming from Little Falls.
Mr. Lewis was of the Catholic faith. In his leisure time he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He had a strong love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. To those who knew him, Richard will always be remembered as a quiet man; any conversation with him was straight and to the point but you felt a sense of warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be sorely missed.
Surviving are his son, Richard W. Lewis Jr. and his wife Nicole of Herkimer, one brother, James Kuroski and his wife Patricia of South Carolina, three sisters, Mary Lyle of Herkimer, Donna Kuroski of Mohawk, Sue Reynolds of Pennsylvania, two grandchildren Noah and Aubrey Lewis of Herkimer, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will take place in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Monday at 4 : 00 p.m. Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director of Blessed Sacrament Church will officiate. Interment with military honors will be later this spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Monday two hours prior to the funeral service (2:00 to 4:00 p.m.)
