Richard N. Mayne, age 87, Claxton Manor, Herkimer, formerly of Millstone Road, Richfield Springs, passed away on Monday morning, May 2, 2016, in Folts Home, Herkimer.
He was born on October 3, 1928, in Richfield Springs, son of the late Newell N. and Lillian Sprague Mayne. Richard was raised in Richfield Springs and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. A veteran of the Korean War he enlisted on April 30, 1951, in the US Air Force. He proudly served with the 4676th Material Squadron specializing in Fire and Crash Rescue and Fire and Crash Rescue Supervision at Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado. He was honorably discharged on April 29, 1955, attaining the rank of Airman First Class.
On May 1, 1955, he was united in marriage to the former Lois Castleman in Kansas, MO. They shared a loving and devoted union of thirty-seven years until her passing on December 6, 1992. Mr. Maynes training in firefighting and crash rescue was his specialty and worked in that capacity for many years at Griffith Air Force Base in Rome. For fifteen years Richard owned and operated The Tavern Restaurant in Richfield Springs. He sold the building to the American Legion Post #616 on the corner of Lake and James Street where it remains today. For a few years after the sale he worked as a bartender for both the Moose and Elks in Utica. Mr. Mayne had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting in Richfield Springs. Dick had a true sense of community; he was a former member of the Richfield Springs Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the American Legion Post #616 Richfield Springs and an Exempt member of the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. To all who knew him, they will never forget a warm, caring and helpful gentleman with an unforgettable smile. He will be sadly missed.
Surviving him are his daughter, Doreen Pross and her husband Robert of Richfield Springs, a brother, Robert Mayne and his wife Barbara of Evington, VA, five cherished grandchildren, Heather Pross, Bobbie Lee Pross, Cody Mayne, Bradley Mayne and Becky Mayne, several great-grandchildren, two nieces and several cousins.
Calling hours for Mr. Mayne will be on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. Funeral service will take place at 11:00 am Saturday in the funeral home with the Reverend Doctor Mark Ioset, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Hospice and Palliative Care, New Hartford or the Richfield Springs Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
