Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Richard Gravelding Rick age 65 of East James Street entered into eternal rest on Monday evening June 16, 2003 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. He was born on February 13, 1938 in Cooperstown, son of the late Francis and Eleanor Armstrong Gravelding. A lifelong Richfield Springs resident he graduated from Richfield Springs High School. On September 14, 1957 he married Alice Smagalski in Saint Josephs Church, Richfield Springs. For forty-three years he was a familiar face in the Richfield Springs business community, owning and operating Ricks Clothing Store on West Main Street. He retired in 2000. He was a member of Saint Josephs Church, Richfield Springs, a lifetime member of Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department with over thirty-five years of service, a member of the First Aid Squad, a member and past treasurer of the Richfield Springs Chamber of Commerce and at one time had served as a Village Trustee. In his leisure time Rick liked to go fishing and was an avid golfer. Rick was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his five grandchildren. He was a respected individual and will be truly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of forty-five years Alice, one son; John and his wife Laurie Gravelding of Clinton, two daughters; Licia and her husband David Ronan of Herkimer, Susan Gardner of Richfield Springs, a brother; Philip and his wife Mary Gravelding of Owego, one sister Carol Chamberlain of Fort Plain, five grandchildren; Sara and Michael Ronan, Christopher and Jamie Gravelding, Amanda Gardner, several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 am in Saint Josephs Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Sister Patricia Woolheater will officiate. Those who wish may make expressions of sympathy to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department, the Catskill Area Hospice of the American Leukemia Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
