Obituary

HERKIMER-Richard Darryl Ruller age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning December 8, 2016 in Albany Medical Center. He had the comfort and support of his loving family at his side. He was born on December 8, 1929 in Herkimer, son of the late Leroy P. and Martha Schultz Ruller. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was educated in L.W. Bills and graduated from Herkimer High School with the class of 1947 where he participated in sports, football and basketball. After graduation from high school he went to work for the Herkimer County Highway Department, the New York State Highway Department and Canal System until he was drafted into the US Army on January 3, 1951. While serving with the Army he was chosen as a Cryptographer in the Army Security Agency and was stationed in Alaska. After being honorably discharged from the service he applied for employment with the United Post Office and served in the Herkimer Post Office retiring in January 1987. On May 22, 1954 he was united in marriage to the former Marion Bulicki, and shared a devoted and union of sixty-two years. After Richard retired from the post office he worked part time at Nathan Galinski Apartments and as an attendant for the Fenner Funeral Home in Herkimer. Mr. Ruller had a strong faith in God and was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. He had a strong sense of community and was a member of the Fort Dayton Steamer Co., the U.T.C., and Herkimer American Legion Post. For over sixty years he was a member of Herkimer Lodge Free and Accepted Masons # 423 (Olive Branch Lodge # 40 F. & A.M. Ilion) and a sixty year member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1430. To those who knew him he was a friendly, caring, outgoing and helpful man. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his six cherished grandchildren. He will be truly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-two years, Marion, three daughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Gary Davis of Mohawk, Joni Lynn and Dr. Chris McGary of Bloomington, IN, Stacie Jo and Joe Laura of Chester, six grandchildren, Brian Davis, Brandon Davis, Brooke Davis, Jackson McGary, Anthony J. and Jake R. Laura. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by Charles Ruller and his wife Mary Grogan Ruller. Calling hours for Richard will be on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am in Trinity Evangelical Church with The Reverend Ann Zimmerman, Pastor officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Oak Hill Cemetery later next spring. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society. Members of Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1439 are asked to meet in the funeral home at 7:00 pm for ritualistic services.
