HERKIMER - Richard (Dick) Alan Shaul, 80, of passed away peacefully on Thursday 30 January 2014 in Bradenton, Florida. Dick was a devoted husband, a loving father and a proud veteran. He was predeceased by his wife Carole in December 2013 after being happily married for nearly 58 years.
Dick, the youngest child of the late Earl and Flora Shaul, was born in Herkimer on 26 April 1933. He graduated from Herkimer High School where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy, Dick proudly served his country as a radioman aboard the U.S.S. Pocono from 1952-55. After discharging from the Navy he married Carole Eisenlord the following year on June 15, 1956.
Dick was employed by New York Telephone Company working as a lineman in Utica, for over 30 years before retiring in 1985. Always an advocate of improving education, Dick served on the Herkimer County School Board of Education from 1985-1993, serving as President from 1991-1993. He also volunteered with AARP for many years teaching driving safety classes to seniors. Dick loved playing golf, travelling, and camping with friends and family. He also enjoyed listening to and playing music and telling jokes.
Dick is survived by his three sons and their families including five grandchildren. Richard Shaul Jr., wife Dana and sons Benjamin and Zachary of Bradenton, Florida, Michael Shaul, wife Anne and children Emily, Jacob and Olivia of Boulder, Colorado, and David Shaul and partner Gene Litton of Redondo Beach, California. He was predeceased by his siblings Everett Shaul and Eleanor Hadcock.
A celebration of life service (for both Carole and Dick) followed by a reception will be held on May 3, 2014 at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church in Herkimer N.Y.
