HERKIMER - Rita Bass Sninchak age 80 of Highland Avenue passed away on Sunday morning August 13, 2006 in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital Cooperstown. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. On this date she and her late husband would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
She was born January 2, 1926 in Herkimer daughter of the late Everett J. Bass Jr. and Anna Neth Bass. A lifelong area resident she was educated in St Francis deSales School, Herkimer and graduated from Mohawk High School with the class of 1944. Rita had worked for the J. J. Newberry Co., Valley Home Improvement Co. and the Boardman Catalogue Store in Herkimer before retiring in 1985.
On August 13, 1946 she was united in marriage with John Sninchak in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. A loving and devoted union of fifty-seven years, Mr. Sninchak passed away in 2004.
As a member of St Francis deSales Church Herkimer she lived a devoted Catholic life.
Rita is remembered by her family as always being there for them. She made time for her home and family as well as her community. She was a member of the Crowley Barnum American Legion Post # 25 Mohawk Ladies Auxiliary, the Middleville Memorial VFW Post # 7220 Ladies Auxiliary, the Knights of Columbus Columbiettes, an associate member of the 351st Bomb Group Association 8th Air Force, a member of the Hobson Memorial Society, the Valley Squares square dancing club and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Her leisure time was spent being an avid Yankee fan. She will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.
Surviving are one son John M. Sninchak Jr. of Herkimer, three daughters, Faye R. Sninchak of Nassau, Nora Zink and her husband Thomas of Sand Lake, Lois A Sninchak of Herkimer, a brother, Everett J. Bass III and his wife Ruth of East Herkimer, one sister, Joan Mahoney of Ilion, two godsons, Michael and his wife Lorrie Bass, William and his wife Jan Bass, two aunts, Mabel Campbell and Patricia Scalia three grandsons, Jeremiah J. Sninchak of Ilion, Thomas J. Zink, Joseph M. Zink both of Sand Lake, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband John she was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Bass, Duane Bass and his wife Helen, Sister-in-law, Mary and her husband Steve Sekel, Mother and Father-in-law Michael and Katherine Sninchak and a nephew Leo Marmet.
Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Thursday at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am in St Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in St Marys Cemetery, town of Herkimer. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to St Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
