SIDNEY CENTER - Robert Otis Ames, age 80, of Fox Farm Road, passed away peacefully on Monday evening January 2, 2011 in the New York Veterans Home at Oxford.He was born on August 2, 1931, in Cooperstown, son of the late Otis Irving and Laura Brown Ames.Bob was raised on the family farm Ames & Sons in Richfield Springs and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.
He proudly served our country during the Korean War. On June 19, 1951 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served with the 318th Fighter-Interception Squadron.He was honorably discharged on June 18, 1955 attaining the rank of Airman First Class.
Mr. Ames was married to the former Patricia Jinks who preceded him in death in 1957.The majority of his working life he was a self-employed mechanic and welder in Sidney. He retired in 2006.
In his leisure time he enjoyed square dancing and in the winter months snowmobiling.To all who knew him he will always be remembered as an honest, hard working man with a quiet manner.Any conversation with him was straight and to the point but you always felt a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him.He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his daughter, Lisa Ann Jahnke and her husband Michael of Milford, one sister Barbara Roth of Mississippi, five grandchildren, Matthew, Mitchell and Marcus Jahnke of Milford, David Nicholas Ames of Nebraska, Crystal Ames of South Carolina, a nephew, Charles Ames of Richfield Springs, two nieces, Carolyn Wilston of Pennsylvania, Susan Compton of Oneonta.Besides his parents and wife Patricia he was preceded in death by his son David Ames who died during Operation Desert Storm in February of 1991 and a brother Albert Ames.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs on Friday from 1:00 until 3:00 pm with a funeral service to immediately follow.The Reverend John Young will officiate.Interment with military honors will take place later this spring in Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. Ames family wishes to extend a special thank you to Bobs dear friend and neighbor Dawn and her family for the help they gave during this time.
