Obituary

HERKIMER-Robert C. Brown age 94 passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 15, 2015 in the Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge. He was born on May 15, 1920 in Mohawk, son of the late George J. and Cleo I. Hughes Brown. A lifelong area resident, he was raised in Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School, class of 1937. He furthered his education attending RPI from 1939 to 1941 studying Aeronautical Engineering. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946. During his service in World War II he received four medals. Upon returning home he attended General Motors Institute from 1946 until 1948 and then joined his father George and uncle Giles at Brown Brothers Chevrolet and Oldsmobile in Herkimer. On May 5, 1951 he was united in marriage with the former Barbara Mary Folts in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-five years until her passing in 2006. In addition to selling cars for Brown Brothers, he also worked at Poppleton Chevrolet and Oldsmobile in Boonville, Richards Motor Sales in Fort Plain, Gault Chevrolet in Endicott, Len Brown Chevrolet in Herkimer and Castle Ford in Herkimer. Bob was a man with a true sense of community. From 1952 to1955 he had served as a Village Trustee for the Village of Herkimer. In 1955 he served as the president of the Herkimer Kiwanis Club. With the opening of the New York State Thruway, Bob would frequently go out in snow storms, with a tow truck to rescue stranded motorists. To anyone who knew him, Bob was a curious person and had many hobbies including candle making and tin smithing under the name of Cooper Candle Company in Richfield Springs. Following his retirement he taught himself about computers and studied the selling of real estate. He also loved fishing and boating and taught boater safety in Richfield Springs. Later he developed an interest in genealogy and taught classes for senior citizens. He investigated old cemeteries throughout Mohawk Valley and spoke to community groups about the need to take care of these historical cemeteries and headstones in them. Mr. Brown will always be remembered for his warm friendly manner and unforgettable smile. He will be truly missed. Surviving are two daughters, Susan Waner of Nelliston, Cynthia J. Cheney of Essex Junction, VT , one son, Charles Robert Brown of Alameda, CA, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a nephew, Robert Bloomfield,, three nieces, Sita Sarna, Sareen Sarna, Shiva Sarna and several cousins. Besides his parents and wife Barbara he was preceded in death by his sisters, Elnora Brown Bloomfield and Annette (Bunny) Brown Sarna. A graveside funeral service with military honors accorded by the US Army will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date to be announced. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., Herkimer.
