Obituary

HERKIMER-Robert R. Davis, age 79, of Smalls Bush Road, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, July 9, 2010, in his home. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on January 7, 1931, in Mohawk, son of the late Charles A. and Delida Crouse Davis. Robert was raised and educated in Ilion. On October 24, 1959 he was united in marriage with the former Mary Nellis in the Universalist Churchin Herkimer. A retired US Navy veteran he served aboard the USS Helena during the Vietnamera, the USS John F. Kennedy during the Iran Contra affair and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was honorably discharged in 1974. After completing his military career he returned to Herkimer where he and his wife have made their home. In 1974, he went to work for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion as a warehouseman. Mr. Davis retired in 1992, after eighteen years of dedicated service with Remington Arms. Bob was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 6531 in East Herkimer. In his leisure time he enjoyed coin collecting, following his favorite major league baseball team, the New York Yankees, watching nightly his favorite TV show the Wheel of Fortune with Vanna White, playing cards and his big red truck. To all who knew him, they will always remember a thoughtful, caring and giving man. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family, especially his fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild and he loved to spoil each and every one of them. He will be greatly missed. Surviving him are his loving wife of fifty years Mary, six daughters, Laurie Ruggerio and her husband Louis of Little Falls, Katherine L. Orts and her husband Ernest, Terri Scialdone Buckley and her husband Donald, Brenda Khoury, Jessica Hartman and her husband Wayne, Shyanne Davis all of Herkimer, close family members, Gloriann Steciak and Justin Thompson, two brothers and their wives, Donald and Faye Davis of Ilion, George and Nikki Davis of San Angelo, TX, a sister, Patricia Maddocks of Frankfort, fifteen cherished grandchildren, one great grandchild several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a son Kevin Charles Davis, five brothers, Voris, George, Charles, Thomas and Carlton Davis and one sister, Vivian Davis. Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 am in Saint Pauls Universalist Church, Little Falls with the Reverend Timothy Hume Behrendt officiating. Military honors accorded by the US Navy will follow. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later time convenient to the family. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm and at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 am (one hour prior to the funeral service). Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
