Obituary

HERKIMER-RobertT. Flynn, 76, of North Bellinger Street died on Tuesday morning, July 4, 2000 inFaxton Hospital, Utica after an extended illness. He wasborn on April 27, 1924, in Herkimer son of the late Louis S. and Elizabeth CoxFlynn. Bob was raised in Old Forge and Herkimer where he graduated from HerkimerHigh School, "Class of 1942". It was also that year that he answeredthe call of his country and enlisted in the US Navy as a flying cadet. He servedall through World War II and was honorably discharged as Seaman First Class in1945. He then entered Syracuse University where graduated with the "Classof 1949" with a degree in economics. After college he became a civilianbuyer for the US Air Force, working in Rome at Griffiss Air Force Base, New YorkCity and later in Boston Massachusetts. He retired in 1969, when due to anaccident he became disabled and moved back to Herkimer. It was in Herkimer wherehe met Catherine Sarah Hartman and on February 22, 1986 they were married inSaint Francis deSales Church by the Reverend Peter Nabozny. Bob had a greatsense of humor and was a caring person. He was in the first group of volunteersto be trained by the Herkimer County Hospice,he taught RCIA class at St Francis deSales Church and brought communion to theresidents at Valley Health Services Inc.. He was a former member of AmericanLegion Post # 31 Little Falls. Survivingbesides his wife of fourteen years Catherine are a brother- in- law, RalphChaffee of Rochester; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Hartman of Herkimer, Maryand her husband Roger Mason of Stony Point, Alice and her husband Ronald Smithof Rochester, an aunt Rita Cox of Rome, several nieces, nephews, cousinsincluding a very special cousin Agnes Tillinghas and his best friend ThomasFeeney of Ilion. Besides his parents Bob was preceded in death by two sisters,Margaret Soskowlaski, Kathleen Chaffee, three brothers-in-law, Charles Hartman,Francis Thomas and Walter Soskowlaski. Funeralfrom FENNER FUNERAL HOME INC., 115 Court Street, Herkimer onFriday at 9:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM inSt Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Peter Nabozny, pastor willofficiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Full military honors willbe accorded. The Family will be present in the funeral home to receive relativesand friends on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Memorial donations may bemade to the St Francis deSales Parish Hall Building Fund or the Herkimer CountyHospice Memorial Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Thefamily wishes to thank the third floor staff of Faxton Hospital for thesupportive and compassionate care.
