MOHAWK-Robert D. Luther age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday morning March 2, 2018 in the Homelife at Folts, Herkimer. He had the support and comfort of his loving family by his side. Bob was born on March 13, 1924 in Herkimer, son of the late Dayton and Vera Folts Luther. He was raised in Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School. After graduation he entered the US Army Air Corps where he served as a Ap and Engine Mechanic. He was honorably discharged on September 26, 1945, attaining the rank Corporal. On June 30 1951 he was united in marriage to the former Virginia Tesch in Rochester. They shared a loving and devoted union of thirty seven years until she preceded him in death on April 15, 1989.
For forty-years Mr. Luther was employed by the New York Telephone Company as a lineman and service foreman. He retired in January of 1985. Bob had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church. He was also a member of the Herkimer County Historical Society and the Telephone Pioneers. He loved to travel. He with his wife Virginia traveled all over the world. In his leisure time he was an accomplished woodworker, wood carver and cabinet maker. In 1963 he embarked on a project, building the family camp single handedly on the shores of Piseco Lake, a vacation spot cherished by family members and friends to this day.
To those who knew him Bob was a caring, energetic and mild mannered man. He was always there to help anyone in need without looking for anything in return. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving him are two sons, Robert A. Luther and his companion Pamela Metott of Ilion, Thomas Luther and his wife Kathleen of Victor, one daughter, Barbara Stein and her husband Leonard of Chester, NH, seven grandchildren, Michael and Jessie Stein, Robert and Allison Luther, Matthew, Kayla and Daniel Luther.
Funeral service for Mr. Luther will take place Monday (today) at 11:00 am in the Mohawk Reformed Church with the Reverend Brian Engel, Pastor officiating. Interment with military honors will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer later this spring at a time to be announced. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Homelife at Folts. Envelopes will be available at the church service or at Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, NY
