RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Robert Shelton Masters age 80 of River Streetpassed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning March 18, 2010 in his home.
He was born on June 23, 1929 in Cooperstown, son of the late Perrin M. and Rose M. Tuller Masters. Bob was raised and educated Richfield Springs and was a graduate of HoldernessPrep School, Plymouth, NHin 1947. He continued his education attending HartwickCollege from 1950 to 1951, Middlebury College University of Vermont 1952 to 1956 and graduating from Syracuse University in 1965 attaining both his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.
For thirty years Mr. Masters taught school for the Syracuse City Schools both at Nottingham and Corcoran High Schools. He retired in 1988. In 1991 he returned to Richfield Springs where he has made his permanent home.
In his leisure time Bob enjoyed listening to classical music and watching sporting events on television especially his beloved Boston Red Sox. A familiar face to everyone in Richfield Springs he could always be found in the Tally-Ho for his morning cup of coffee or getting his daily exercise by walking the streets of Richfieldwith his loving and devoted companion Maxine. To all who knew him, he will always be remembered as quiet, gentle and giving person. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his companion of more than twenty years Maxine Armstrong, three sons and their wives, Timothy and Cheryl Masters of Boston, MA, Jeffrey and Heidi Buckman of Clay, Kevin and Brandi Masters of Camillus, a daughter, Perrine Masters and her fianc Christian Engle of Syracuse, six grandchildren and two nieces, Allison Mactavish of Arlington, VA, and Leslie and her husband Scott Rosenzweig of Alexandria, VA and several cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Peter Masters in 2005, a sister, Elizabeth Masters Swift and a brother-in-law Rodney Swift.
Funeral service will take place on Monday evening at 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. The Reverend John Dixon Bartle, Rector of St. Johns Episcopal Church Richfield Springs and the Reverend Deborah Waldron, Pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs will officiate. Interment will be later this spring in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home
