Obituary

Richfield Springs - Robert L. Simon "Sonny" age 73, of East James Street, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Wednesday, June 5, 2002. He was born on January 28, 1929, in Rock Valley, son of the late Lorenzo and Isabelle Gould Simon. He was raised and educated in Long Eddy and Calicoon Schools. An honorably discharged US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict he attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. For a number of years he worked as a window washer on many of the well-known skyscrapers in New York City. He did construction work for various building contractors and for ten years worked for Randy Weldon Salvage Yard in Richfield Springs, retiring in 1992. Mr. Simon has resided in Richfield Springs since 1962 coming from Springfield. Sonny enjoyed NASCAR racing and bowling. He had a strong love for the outdoors where he hunted and fished. He was a friend to many especially those at the Richfield Springs American Legion Post #616 where he was a member. Surviving him are one son, Richard Simon of Oneonta; a daughter, Betty and her husband Douglas Dorman of Milford; a brother, William and his wife Jeanne Simon of East Branch; two sisters, Vonne Williams of Long Eddy, Lorraine and her husband Ed Hasser of Vienna, VA; a brother-in-law, Fred Simms of Castleton-on-Hudson; one grandson, James Dorman of Milford, several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Alan Miller, pastor of the Richfield Springs Bible Church will officiate. Interment will be on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Rock Valley Cemetery, Hancock Township, NY. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday (today) from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Members of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post #616 are asked to meet in the funeral home at 6:45 p.m. for ritualistic services. Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
