MOHAWK - Roger VernonTucker, age 92, of Griffin Roadpassed away peacefully on Friday morning September 24, 2010, in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born on November 24, 1917, in Mohawk, a son of the late William and Alma Griffin Tucker. A lifelong Mohawk resident he attended school in Ft. Herkimerand graduated from Herkimer High School.
A proud veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the US Army on December 30, 1942, He served overseas in the Southern Philippineswith the 205th AAA AW BN as a fire control instrument operator and was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946.
As a member of the International Union of Operator Engineers Local #545, Syracuse, for over twenty years he worked road construction retiring in the early 1970s. He was a member of the General Herkimer Chapter #162 Disabled American Veterans.
Roger enjoyed farming. For many years he and his brother maintained the family homestead farm. He took pride in his heritage that dated back to the 1600. In his leisure time he enjoyed reading especially books about the Adirondacks.
For those who knew him, they could sense the presence of a kind and gentle man. He was there to lend a helping hand to a neighbor and friend; however his family was his first priority. He cherished the time spent with them. Relatives have fond memories of times together at the homestead. He will be greatly missed by neighbor, friends and family.
Surviving are many cousins among them are Kenneth W. Griffinof Frankfort, Dennis and Carol Cross of Herkimer
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his only brother Arnold Tucker, and two first cousins James and Donald Griffin.
The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc, 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Tuesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 am receive relatives and friends. A graveside service with military honors will follow at in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the American Cancer Society or the Stephen Swan Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
