Herkimer - Roger A. Salvagni, age 77, of Canady Avenue, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2008 in the VA Hospital, Syracuse after a brief illness. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on March 8, 1931 in Herkimer a son of Angelina Levecchilo Salvagni and the late Roggero (Roger) A. Salvagni. A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Herkimer. A veteran of the Korean War, her served with the US Army and was a recipient of the Korean Service Medal with Five Bronze Service Stars. He was honorable discharge in June of 1952 attaining the rank of Corporal. For over forty years he was a self employed carpenter who never truly retired. He was a member of the Church of Sts Anthonyand Joseph, Michael Pliseck VFW Post #1495 and a former member of the Tony R. George Post. Roger had a zest for life. He enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing and boating at Sylvan Beach. First and foremost he was a devoted father. He took great pride in each of their accomplishments.
Surviving are his mother Angelina Salvagni, a sister Rita Witkowski both of Herkimer, nine children, Betty and Tony Malagisi of Rochester, Mary and Bill Mosher of Fort Plain, Isabelle (Jamie) and Chuck Herringshaw of Fort Knox KY, Tammy and Charlie Brown, Roger and Lori Salvagni, Alan and Jackie Salvagni, and their mother Nancy DeRusso all of Ilion, Tim Salvagni of Mohawk, Donna Shingledecker of Herkimer, seventeen grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, two nieces, and many great nieces and nephews. Besides his father Roggero, he was preceded in death by his twin infant brother Anthony, a daughter Robin Lee Davis, his wives, Rita Empy , Jeanie Salvagni and fiance Dorothy Shingledecker.
Funeral service will be on Thursday 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery later this spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Veteran Administration Hospital,800 Irving Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13210.
