RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Ronald C. Moshier Sr., 78, passed away with his loving family by his side on Wednesday, January 4, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born on June 21, 1933, in the Town of Springfield, the son of Robert and Inez (Drake) Mosher and stepson of Lena Mae (Swartz) Moshier.
He was the husband of Violet (Turner) Moshier for 57 years, and a very caring father and family man who loved and adored their five children and six grandchildren. They were his pride and joy. His deep blue eyes and warm, friendly smile lit up a room. He will forever be remembered and revered by family and countless friends as Dad, Father, Grandpa, Uncle, Pops, Popsie, Mo, The General, Ron and Ronnie.
He was a Korean War veteran who served in the Air Force. He worked in road construction as a heavy equipment operator for nearly 50 years. Willing and able to operate any piece of machinery as soon as he took a seat, he was widely respected as a master Gradall and bulldozer operator.
As was his father, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, the stock car races at Fonda Speedway, and snowmobiling, always ready to round up family and friends for a Rum Hill or Fly Creek valley trail ride and hot dog roast in the woods. He was a proud fan of Richfield Springs Central School athletics, a member of the Watauga Club, and a golfer who twice recorded a hole-in-one.
Most comfortable behind the wheel of his tractor, he also was a skilled mechanic and carpenter who along with his sons built his home on the hill. He would do anything to help family and friends, his most prized possessions, and the spot at the end of a very long and fully-stocked Sunday dinner table will always be his.
A kind man, he is survived by his loving wife, Violet, of Richfield Springs, and their five children, Ron Moshier Jr. and his wife Monica of Whitesboro; Randy Moshier and his wife Paula of Richfield Springs; Laurie Smith and her husband Tom of Richfield Springs; Robert Moshier and his wife Robin of Richfield Springs; and Amy Hula and her husband George of Richfield Springs; and their six grandchildren, Tom Smith and his wife Jessica of Massena; Christopher Smith and his wife Danielle of Liberty; Catherine Moshier and Robert Moshier Jr. of Richfield Springs; and Roman Hula and Carson Hula of Richfield Springs.
He also leaves a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Douglas and Helen Rhyde and their children, Pat, Mike, Sue and Kelly; a caring and dear niece, Karen Palmer, her husband Doug Palmer and their daughters Jennifer and Rebecca; nephews Billy Mosher and Steve Mosher and niece Sharon Shoemaker; many other nieces and nephews; and dear friends from near and far.
He was predeceased by his mother, father and stepmother and brothers William Mosher and Francis Mosher, both of Richfield Springs.
The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Bassett Hospital for their outstanding care.
A Funeral service will be held on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. The Reverend John Young will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
