Obituary

HERKIMER-Ruby Belle Harrer age 83 of Protection Avenue passed away on Wednesday evening April 5, 2006 in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. She was born on April 30, 1922 in Herkimer, daughter of the late David and Rose Knout Bowman. A lifelong Herkimer resident, she was educated in Herkimer schools. On September 4, 1943 she was united in marriage with Joseph Garfield Harrer in the Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. Ruby was an amazing and wonderful woman whose life was entirely devoted to her to family and home. Cherished are the memories of camping trips to Caroga Lake and the leisure time that she spent crocheting Afghans. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are her devoted husband of sixty-two years Joseph, one daughter, Rebecca and her husband Dennis Shaut Sr. of Mohawk, a son Joseph and his wife Maureen Harrer of East Herkimer, one brother, Richard and his wife Betty Bowman, one sister, Grace Ingraham all of Ilion one sister-in-law, Mary Bowman of Herkimer, five grandchildren, Jodi and her husband Daniel Rivers, Dennis Shaut Jr. and his wife Reagan, Joseph and his wife Sarah Harrer, James and his wife Carin Harrer and Jason Harrer, seven great grandchildren, Lucas, Kyle and Morgan Rivers, Tracey and Hunter Shaut, Bailey and Dillon Harrer, several nieces, nephews and cousins, Beside her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers Alfred and Harold Bowman and two sisters, Sarah Lawrence and Edna Jackson. Funeral service will be on Saturday at 2:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Ann Zimmerman, Pastor of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will be later this spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday two hours prior to the funeral service (12:00 noon until 2:00 pm). Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the fourth floor surgical unit of Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Ruby during her hospital stay.
