Obituary

HERKIMER-Ruth Jackson Abele age 92 formerly of Westwood Drive passed away on Monday evening March 5, 2018 in Valley Health Services, Inc. She was born on January 14, 1926 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Floyd Earl and Marion Hopkinson Jackson. A lifelong Herkimer resident she was a graduate of Herkimer High School with the class of 1945. She continued her education at the Utica School of Commerce graduating with a degree in Secretarial Science. Following her graduation from USC she first worked at Remington Rand Typewriter in Ilion, then the Library Bureau in Herkimer, the Education Department in Albany and finished her career with the Herkimer Soil and Water Conservation Department. On October 22, 1949 she was united in marriage to Henry Frederick Abele in New Hartford. They shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-six years until his passing on May 30, 2016. Mrs. Abele had a strong belief in God and was a life member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. She was a past member of Myrtle Chapter (Evening Star Valley Chapter #82) Order of the Eastern Star where she held several offices, a member of the Henderson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as past Regent officer of the General Nicholas Herkimer Chapter of the DAR, and the Limekiln Lake Association She and Henry built a life of family enjoyment at their Limekiln Lake camp. The family looks forward to continuing the lake life tradition, storytelling around the campfire and sitting on Aunt Ruthies beach. To all who knew Ruth they will never forget a warm, caring and loving lady with an unforgettable smile and wink. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are one daughter, Janice Huminuik and her husband Michael of Banff, Alberta, Canada, two sons, Thomas E. Abele and his wife Brenda of Rochester, Edward W. Abele and Kathleen Lowery of Little Falls, a sister, Marilyn Card of Utica. Grandchildren, Matthew and wife Tiffany Abele of Oneida, Sara and husband Josh Gross of Little Falls, Michael Abele, Nicholas Abele both of Rochester, Kirby Huminuik of Canada, Chad Daignault and wife Lisa of Rochester and Todd Daignault Syracuse. Great grandchildren, Sam and Nicole Marks, Lucas Abele and Connor Gross and Roshan Mukunda, Brooke Daignault, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours for Mrs. Abele will be on Saturday from 1:00 until 4:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will take place on Sunday at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Pastor Joelle Faulks, of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls officiating. Interment will be later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery at a time to be announced. Members of Evening Star Valley Chapter #82 Order of the Eastern Star are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday at 12:45 pm for ritualistic services.
