MOHAWK-Shirley Louise Sweet age 80 passed away peacefully on Saturday morning February 22, 2014 in Little Falls Hospital. She had the assuring comfort of her loving family at her side.
She was born on July 24, 1933 in Salisbury Center, daughter of the late Charles Jay and Angie Pockette Nichols. A lifelong area resident she was educated in Little Falls. On June 10, 1950 she was united in marriage with George H. Sweet Jr. in Little Falls. They shared a loving and devoted union of sixty-three years until his passing on January 19, 2013.
Mrs. Sweet had a deep faith in God and was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk. Her entire life was devoted to her home and family. In her leisure time she could always be found at a garage sale, whether it be near or far. To all who knew Shirley, she was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family. She will be sorely missed.
Surviving are a son Franklyn and Irene Sweet of Mohawk, five daughters, Shelley Johnson of Tavares, FL, Nadine and Charles Tripple, Michelle Hare, Brenda and Raymond Reynolds all of Mohawk, Angela Sweet of Utica, one sister, Gloria and John Joyce of Frankfort, eight grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband George, she was preceded in death by a brother, Walter J. Nichols, three sisters, Geraldine Guidroz, Theresa Carmen and Beverly Noonan.
Calling hours for Mrs. Sweet will be on Wednesday from 4:00 until 6:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm in the funeral home with Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Community Life Director of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk officiating. Interment will be later this spring in Salisbury Rural Cemetery.
