Obituary

HERKIMER - Sidney J. Glines, 82, of 104 North Washington St., formerly of 429 North Main St., entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, in Folts Homes, Herkimer. He was born May 5, 1920, in the town of Manheim, son of the late Jasper H. and Vida Cool Glines. Sid was a graduate of RJK Hillsdale and went on to ITI in Chicago, where he received a degree in electrical engineering. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 194th Glider Infantry. He saw combat in Africa, Italy, England, Germany and was in the second wave at Normandy. He was honorably discharged in 1950. On May 28, 1945, he married the former Olive Mary Unsworth in Kearsley, England. For 26 years Mr. Glines worked as an electrician for the United States government, and was located at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome. He had a strong belief in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer, where he had served on the church vestry. He was a member of the Middleville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and had served as unit commander. He had a great interest in scouting. He was scout master of Troop 2 BSA and troop chairman for Scout Troop 3 BSA. He also was a former member of Herkimer Lodge 423 Free and Accepted Masons and the Shrine. All who knew him will remember his easygoing manner and friendly personality. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Olive; two daughters, Barbara Stiefvater and her husband Craig of Utica and Diane Pavalock of Osprey, Fla.; a foster son, David Cool of Baldwinsville; one brother, Truman Glines Blair of Nova Scotia; and one sister, Myrtle Humphreville of Ilion; a sister-in-law, Grace Darling of Chatham; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a foster son, Carl Cool, three brothers, Leon Glines, Harold and Walter Darling, and one sister, Millie Dallas. Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Rev. Paul Bailey, rector, will officiate. Mr. Glines will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery later this spring at a time to be announced. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 300 N. Main St., Herkimer 13350 or the Boy Scouts of America Revolutionary Trails Council, 427 N. Main St., Herkimer 13350. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
