EARLVILLE - Sidney Swiphas, 99, of East Main St., passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2001, in Valley View Nursing Home, Norwich. He was born April 11, 1902, in Pittston, Pa., son of the late William and Teckla Levisky Swiphas. Mr. Swiphas was raised and educated in Brooklyn. For many years he was a self-employed painter and decorator. On July 5, 1943, he married Bessie Sponburgh in Erie, Pa. They resided in Richfield Springs until the 1950s when they moved to Earlville. Surviving besides his wife of 58 years, Bessie, is one stepson Donald Mason of Earlville; a brother Andrew Swiphas of LaPeer, Mich. and two sisters, Ann Swiphas and Teckla Swiphas, both of Sherburne. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Swiphas in 1907, William Swiphas in 1917 and Joseph Swiphas in 1982. A graveside memorial service will be held in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs at a later time to be announced. Memorial donations may be made to the Earlville Volunteer Fire Department.
