EARLVILLE - Sophie Leveda Swiphas, 106, of East Main Street, entered into eternal rest Sunday evening, Jan. 4, 2004, in her home. She had the comfort of her loving son at her side.
She was born April 14, 1897, in Richfield Springs, daughter of the late Elmer and Eva Goddard Sponburgh. A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield Springs High School. Sophie had owned and operated a candy store in Richfield Springs until 1946. On July 5, 1943, she married Sidney Swiphas in Erie, Pa. Theirs was a loving and devoted union of 58 years. They resided in Richfield Springs until the 1950s, when they moved to Earlville. Mr. Swiphas preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2001. Surviving is her son, Donald R. Mason of Earlville. Besides her parents and husband, Sidney, a brother, Roy Sponburgh preceded her in death. A graveside service will be held in Lakeview Cemetery later this spring at a time to be announced. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Earlville Fire Department.
