HERKIMER-Stanley I. Piper age 91 of Highland Avenue and more recently the Masonic Care Community, Utica passed away peacefully on Monday morning April 18, 2011 in Faxton-Saint Lukes Medical Center.
He was born on June 26, 1919 in Herkimer, son of the late Charles J. and Matilda M. Eycke Piper. A lifelong area resident he was educated in Herkimer and was a graduate of Ilion High School, class of 1937. On May 8, 1943 he was united in marriage with Olive Casadonte in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Fred Cotnam officiated. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-seven years until her passing on August 20, 2000. That same year in 1943, he answered the call of his country, enlisting in the United States Navy. A proud veteran of World War II he was honorably discharged in 1946 attaining the rank of Storekeeper First Class.
For twenty-five years Stan was employed by UNIVAC and another seventeen years for the Remington Arms Company as a Field Service Technician. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Piper had a strong belief in God and was a devoted member of the First United Church Herkimer/Little Falls for sixty-eight years. He had served on the church Board of Trustees, was President of the Mens Club and served on all committees of the church in one capacity or another. He was a sixty-year member of Herkimer Lodge # 423 Free and Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, he also served as State and District Supervisor of the Masonic National Camping Travelers. Stan was a member of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25 Mohawk and the Sampson World War II Navy Veterans Inc. For fifteen years he served as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop # 2 BSA where he received the Order of the Arrow, and for fifteen years he was a volunteer at Folts Home, Herkimer. Stan was also a very enthusiastic sports fan and athlete enjoying bowling, fishing and horseshoes well into his 90s. He earned many medals in the Senior Olympics in both Florida and Masonic Care Community.
Mr. Piper will always be remembered as a kind and gentle person who loved his family, his country, his church and his fellow man. He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed.
Surviving him are one son, The Reverend Gerald Piper and his wife Kathy of Olean, twin daughters, Jacquelyn Sadowski of East Syracuse and Barbara Gilbraith with her husband Delbert of Syracuse, one sister Naomi (Judy) Steele of Ilion, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, and two nephews. Besides his parents and wife Olive he was preceded in death by a son-in-law Joseph Sadowski.
Funeral service will be on Thursday at 1:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer with the Reverend Janet Gleason, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls and the Reverend Gerald Piper officiating. Interment service with military honors provided by the United States Navy will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls or the Masonic Care Community. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of Olive Branch Lodge # 40 Free and Accepted Masons are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 4:30 pm for ritualistic services.
