RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Stephen J. Bartl, age 53, of Bibik Road, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening Jan. 23, 2003, in Bassett Health Care, Cooperstown.
He was born Jan. 31, 1949 in New York City, the son of Juanita Sauer Bartl and the late John J. Bartl Jr. A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he was educated in Richfield Springs Central Schools. An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he proudly served during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Vietnam. On May 28, 1977, he married Debra Ostrander in Richfield Springs. Steve at one time had worked at the Snyder Bicycle Company in Little Falls and for a number of years at the Remington Arms Co. in Ilion.
He had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. He was also a member of the Vets Club in Cooperstown. Steve enjoyed mechanics and spent much of his spare time working on cars, tractors or anything else that ran with a motor. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family, especially his granddaughter Beth Ann. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Surviving besides his wife of 25 years, Debra, and his mother, Juanita, are two daughters, Mary Ann Bartl and Megan Renee Bartl; one brother, John J. Bartl III; a sister, Carol Ann Attridge and her husband Christopher; one granddaughter, Beth Ann Snyder, all of Richfield Springs; and several nieces., nephews and cousins.
Besides his father John J. Bartl Jr., a brother Phillip Bartl preceded him in death.
Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. The Rev. Terrence Healy will officiate. Mr. Bartl will be laid to rest in Saint Joseph's Cemetery in the spring at a time to be announced. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
