RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Stephen D. Mizerak age 92 of East Main Street passed away on Wednesday evening November 20, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with the comfort of his loving family. He was born on December 6, 1920 in Little Falls, son of the late John and Kristina Holic Mizerak. A lifelong area resident he was raised in Springfield Center and was a graduate of East Springfield High School. On October 6, 1956 he was united in marriage with the former Sara Plaskon in Saint Marks Episcopal Church, Syracuse. In 1968 they built a home and raised their family in Richfield Springs. Steve joined Massena Laborers local #322 in 1953 and was very proud of his contribution to the St. Lawrence Seaway Project. He was Union Secretary and Labor Steward under the Sam Agati administration. Steve worked on a myriad of road and heavy construction projects in the North Country concluding on Fort Drum with his retirement in 1988. In fact he had just received his 60 Year Service Award and was one of the unions longest lifetime members. In his early years he enjoyed bowling, roller skating, hunting and card games with his friends. In more recent years he loved going to the Turning Stone Casino and playing high stakes five dollar blackjack and enjoying the buffet with wife, Sara and cousin Barb Steckler. Right until his passing he could be found in his pickup running errands downtown or on his Cub Cadet mowing two acres of lawn. To all who knew him they will never forget a good natured, down to earth kind of man. Any conversation with him was straight and to the point yet you always felt a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be truly missed by his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren. Surviving are his devoted wife of fifty-seven years Sara, a son Steven D. Mizerak and fiancee Kaitlyn Kovacs of Whitesboro, one daughter Joanna Tomlinson and her husband John of Skaneateles, a brother, Milan Mizerak and his wife Ollie of Springfield Center, a sister, Mildred Mizerak of Binghamton, four grandchildren, David Mizerak, Nicholas Mizerak, Sarah Tomlinson, Alexandra Tomlinson, one niece, Kristina Dahl and her husband Nelson of Phoenix, AZ and two great nieces, Loni and Riley. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, John Mizerak and a sister, Christine Cibulka. Calling hours for Mr. Mizerak will be on Monday from 3:30 to 6:30 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs. A Service of the Burial of the Dead from the book of Common Prayer will follow at 6:30 pm in the funeral home with the Reverend John Dixon Bartle, Rector of Saint Johns Episcopal Church officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Richfield Springs Rescue Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
